A Personal & Professional Shift: Pelvic Floor Acupuncture
For the past two years, I’ve been living with pelvic floor pain. I saw OB/GYNs and specialists, but no one could quite explain what was happening — until I joined the team at Naturally Balanced Therapy. With the support of Dr. Melissa and Shilpa Kumar, I finally began to get answers and build a care plan that actually made sense.
Dr. Melissa is a chiropractor with a special interest in women’s health and the pelvic floor. Shilpa Kumar is a pelvic floor physiotherapist with advanced training in complex pelvic health. Both have generously shared their expertise as I deepen my understanding of this often-overlooked part of the body.
Right now, there are no pelvic floor-specific acupuncturists in Canada (that I know of) — and I hope to change that. I’ve been diving into this work from every angle: learning from practitioners who specialize in biofeedback, fascia, somatic movement, yoga, and emotional processing. My goal is to create a holistic, compassionate, multi-layered approach to pelvic floor care — one rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and informed by the brilliant minds I learn from every day.
What I’ve discovered is this: pelvic floor issues are incredibly common — and often invisible. Many people suffer silently, unsure of what to ask or where to turn.
This experience lit a fire in me. I’ve been dedicating myself to learning everything I can — not just to heal myself, but to help others. I’ll be travelling to the U.S. in September for advanced pelvic floor acupuncture training. In the meantime, I’m already supporting patients, doing deep research, and creating resources in this much-needed area of care.
Where I Am on This Path
I’m not a pelvic floor expert — yet. But I’m learning every day.
I’m living it. I’m actively treating patients. And I’m deeply committed to creating safe, effective, whole-person care for those navigating pelvic floor symptoms — especially when answers are hard to find.
If this is something you’re dealing with, I’d be honoured to walk alongside you.
Learning Out Loud
Because I’m on this journey myself, I’m starting a new Instagram series to take you along for the ride — a behind-the-scenes look at all the weird and wonderful things I’m discovering about the pelvic floor: from muscles and fascia to movement, emotions, and everything in between.
This series is for the curious, the quietly struggling, and anyone who loves learning how the body works. It won’t be polished or perfect — but it will be real, honest, and maybe even a little fun.
Follow along: https://www.instagram.com/dr.tanyakelloway — I’d love to learn together.
What Are Pelvic Floor Issues?
Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the bottom of your pelvis. These muscles support your bladder, uterus, and bowels — and they’re involved in things like going to the bathroom, having sex, breathing, and even how you hold your body.
When these muscles are too tight, too weak, or not working quite right, it can cause symptoms that affect your whole body.
Some common signs:
- Always feeling like you have to pee, or leaking urine
- Trouble emptying your bladder or bowels
- Constipation, bloating, or incomplete bowel movements
- Pain during sex or pelvic exams
- Pressure or heaviness in your pelvis
- Lower back, hip, or tailbone pain
- Pain that shows up with sitting, standing, or stress
- Pain after childbirth, surgery, or menopause that hasn’t resolved
Other signs you might not expect:
- Anxiety or body tension that doesn’t go away
- Pain that gets worse with emotional stress
- Feeling disconnected from your breath or lower body
- Ongoing fatigue or tension without a clear cause
- A feeling that “something’s off” in your core or pelvic area
It's More Than Just the Pelvic Muscles
When we talk about pelvic floor dysfunction, we’re not just talking about the small group of muscles at the base of your pelvis.
Muscles from your waist down — including your hips, lower back, and even your legs — can refer pain into the pelvic region. Fascia (connective tissue), scars, posture, breathing habits, and even emotional experiences can all play a role. Pelvic floor dysfunction is rarely just about one thing — it’s a puzzle with many pieces.
It can feel overwhelming or even scary — like you’ll never get back to feeling “normal.”
But here’s the truth:
Every person’s pelvic pain or dysfunction is different. It requires care, curiosity, and a whole-body approach to figure out what’s really going on — and how to gently unwind it.
Sometimes, it’s not about “fixing” the area, but relearning how to relate to it, move with it, and support it in daily life. With the right care and support, change is possible.
If this resonates with you, know that you’re not alone — and support is available. I’d love to walk alongside you as we explore what your body needs.
